3MW Proposal

Mind Map
Obsessions/passions

We are going to interview people who have a certain obsession or are passionate about something.
What they get out of them, how it surrounds their daily lives, what sort of activities they do which focus around them.

The documentary mode of our 3MW would be an expository documentary because they expose a person, and it will contain facts, questions and opinions.

The primary target audience for the documentary would be teenagers/students people aged between 15-19 years old, our secondary audience would be adults who were aged from 20-30 years old because they might also share an interest into the topic.

The aim of our documentary would be to portray people's obsessions and highlight certain things that people deeply enjoy so the public could see a different side of people and possibly feel more confident to express their personal obsession themselves.

We will be filming in two locations one will be one of the interviewees home and the other will be in a dark room at college then the other outside on a bench, we will need to travel to the interviewees home but it is only about 5 minutes from my home so i will not have to pay for transport to and from that location. For college it will be our usual transport of a bus there and back so it will not have to be placed in our budget.

The only people we will need for our production is ourselves and the interviewee as it is not a big production where there needs to be various crew on set, i will only need the camera the tripod and the notes with the questions on them to ask.

The documentary would mostly consist of questions because it is the mode we are going for the questions consist of 'if you could ask people with obsessions questions what would they be?' and 'do you have anything you are passionate about?'

With equipment and props there isn't much which is needed props will be the things that are in the background of the shot for example room furniture or outside furniture.

The proposed budget for this production is nothing because there isn't anything that needs to be bought for the production as it is all already self own.

Ownership and Funding.

Ownership concepts

PSB refers to broadcasting intended for public benefit rather than to serve purely commercial interests. These programmes include local news coverage, arts programmes and religious broadcasts, Ofcom requires that certain television and radio broadcasters fulfill certain requirements as part of their license to broadcast. All of the BBC's television and radio stations have a public service remit, including those that broadcast digitally.

Commercial Broadcasting
Commercial broadcasting is the broadcasting of television programmes and radio programming by privately owned corporate media, as opposed to state sponsorship. They use advertising to fund their broadcasting operations for a profit, this page describes commercial broadcasters in detail and links to lists of current licence holders, an example is Morrisons sponsoring Britains Got Talent.

Corporate ownership

A corporate ownership can involve any number of owners but it turns the business into a corporation, a corporate ownership structure allows the business to last indefinitely. They also protects owners' liability so if someone files a lawsuit against the business, the owners aren't personally responsible and their personal assets are protected.

Private ownership is funded simply by advertising also the owners have complete control over any decisions and it is not government run. Therefore it is more able satisfying the company shareholders rather than the public’s interest, the big advantage of Private ownership is that as its run purely on advertising funds there are many companies desperate to advertise their products on TV as its now own of the most influential sources of Media today. they would have complete control of all business decisions.

A global company is a firm doing business in more than one country or it could have executives from various countries, the concept of "global" might be defined here according to its ownership or its reach. What all the definitions have in common is that "global" must refer to ideally more than two or three countries affected in some important way by the actions of the firm.

Vertical Integration is the degree to which a company owns another company, each company will produce something different then they will all form together at the end, basically a merging of companies.
http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/vertical-integration.html

Horizontal integration is where a production company expands into other areas of one industry. This means that the company can develop in a particular area of production or they can buy out another company that deals with these areas, an example is Disney who own various companies such as Pixar, Marvel, and ESPN.

A monopoly is where someone wants to own and be in power of everything, you basically posses and control companies an example is Rupert Murdoch he owns all of 21st Century Fox which covers hundreds of news channels and the film studio 21st Century Fox which currently produces some massive block busters now a days, also the New York Post and most UK news papers as they are all owned by News UK which is owned by News Corps which is then owned by him as you can see he owns a lot of companies within companies. Because he owns such a wide variety of news papers they can be biased for example during the election most of the news papers were slandering Labour because they were owned by people who are conservatives (Rupert Murdoch) and so Labour and other parties didn't get any good coverage or not any coverage at all, here is an example of one of the headlines slating Ed Milliband and not taking him seriously which puts him in a bad light.

Funding

A television licence fee allows the BBC's UK services to remain free of advertisements and independent of shareholder and political interest, it provides you with a wide range of TV, radio and online content. A standard color TV licence costs £145.50 which is the equivalent of £12.13 per month of just under 40p per day.

a TV subscription is a fee you pay for certain package with different companies for example the BT TV Starter and Broadband package which includes free BT sport, up to 17Mbps broadband and 10GB usage, 5GB BT Cloud, no calls included and 71 channels, 10 hd channels and a yearly contract for as much as £4.50 per month.

You can get freesat from Sky is an easy way of getting digital satellite television for a simple one-off payment of £175, which includes 240 digital tv channels, over 85 digital radio stations and free to air HD channels.

Pay-per-view is a type of paid television service in which a subscriber of the television service can purchase events to view via private telecast, it is for satellite or cable and charges you a fee in addition to the fixed monthly charge.

TV sponsorship is funding which is provided to a television program or network to help pay for airtime, one or two companies will fund the product in exchange for a slot on either the end of ad breaks during a programme broadcast.

Television advertising is where a company of a certain product will pay to have something advertised during certain shows to target audience, for example a 30 or 60 second commercial broadcast during an event such as the super bowl can reach the eyes and ears of billions of potential customers.
Product placement of Pepsi in the terminator.

Product placement is the inclusion of a branded product in media normally without straight up references to the product most commonly they are advertised in movies, television shows and video games, it is a way to pull marketing. It can work in various ways it can either be subtle and just in the background (in the Terminator for example) or they could have a deal in which the product is provided for the crew in exchange for placement .
Private capital is in which money is provided to a business as a loan or equity investment that does not come from an institutional source, such as a bank or government entity, or from the public through selling stock on a sock exchange.

Crowd funding is a way of raising finance by asking a large number of people each for a small amount of money, it uses the idea of using the internet to talk to thousands of potential funders, usually those seeking funds will set up a profile of their project on a website such as those run by our members.

Development funding is what is used to describe financial capital given in support of creating a new project for example some projects such as new real estate, community programs or new business ventures. The fun can be offered in the form of a grant designated for such projects or in the form of a loan from the bank.

Contractual, legal and ethical letter

Paragraph 1: introduction & contracts

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to you to point out and make clear the contractual, legal and ethical issues with your job advertisement, i do not wish to apply for this position instead i am going to point out the errors within  your advert in anticipation that you will acknowledge them and change them. A contract of employment are legal agreements which relate to your own terms of employment, they will contain items such as 'what you job title and role are within the company ' Also your contracted hours within the working week'  and 'what payment you will receive your annual salary and holiday entitlement ' Confidentiality clauses  your contract of employment should be stored in a safe and secure place and only accessible to those who
have permission to access it..

The Equality Act (2010) is the legalisation enforced to ensure everyone under employment has an equal opportunity to work. This legalisation looks at the discrimination on the grounds of race, gender and age. This can be a major issue that can effect individuals under employment. This legalisation will look at creating equality within the work place and ensuring everyone has an equal right to work. Therefore under the "Equality Act (2010)" every individual has equal rights to be employed in any work based environment. Looking at other legislations such as " race relations act 1976" and the " disability discrimination act 1995 these have been taken into consideration to create the equality act which enforces all of these policies and requirements to be followed.

However in relation to the job advertisement a few issues regarding equality are noticeable. Within the job requirements it mentions a specific age requirement that must be followed to obtain the job descriptions requirements. Within the job description it states that male and female occupants must be under the age of 30. This therefore discriminates against the 'equality act 2010' as it looks at a specific age and does not offer equality. Also within the job advertisement it looks at the different religious views of individuals stating that the job requirements look just at the Christian religious belief. This also discormiates against the legalisation and does not show equality.

This job advertisement looks at working within a school with young children producing a video documentary on the 'no means no date rape campaign'. In the following job description it lists ways to help engage school children to make them feel more comfortable discussing previous experiences and issues around that subject. This will be linked to the health and safety of the employer and the school children. The health and safety act ensures that the employer and employees are kept protected. Working with school children this may potentially propose the chances of risk of the employee. Enforcing reinactments and dramatisations in front of children may cause a risk to the child and the employee. This can anger the children and cause them to react and can also bring back memories of previous experiences which can lead to psychological problems of the child. 'The employers liability act 1969'. Ensures that a minimal level of insurance is there to cover the employee or any potential risks at work or risks towards any other individuals in the working environment.

This job advertisement being placed in a school will ensure that a dated CRB check for the employee is undertaken so that they are deemed efficient and safe to work alongside children and young people. This is a legal requirement tat must be undertaken to ensure the safety of the children as well as the protection of the employee. This job wil require a lot of trust as it entails talking to young children about a very serious subject.

There are many ethical issues that this job can portray. These are issues such as representation and codes of practice. Representation is the way in which people are represented in the media. This can show the way in which the audience judge a certain individual on what they have to say in front of a camera. The media can portray an individual to look like a bad person and influence the way that the public eye will see them. This job entails working with children in a school recording them to have their opinion and share experience on the no mean no date rape campaign. Within the job advertisement it looks at how to engage the children to share experiences and for the employee to use reenactments and dramatization to engage the child to share more in depth experiences and thoughts. This can portray the child to have to says things they don't want to say. Therefore this will portray the way the children are seen in the documentary.

Social concerns can arise from the children within the school. In the following. Job description it clearly states that children will be recorded and will be reinforced to make opinions on their previous experiences. In my opinion I feel that this would ensure that the children are very uncomfortable and worried or express thoughts and opinions. This can lead to many social concerns for the children. The media can favor or reject a child and make them out to look bad and can reflect the way that the older generation or target audience view that age group. This job advertisement is inappropriate in the way it encourages the employee to enforce reenactments which will be uncomfortable for the child. This can lead to further social issues such as bullying and neglection of children, due to some children not wanting to share experiences and feeling vulnerable around others.

Ofcom clearly states in section one of protecting the under eighteens that the material that is shown cannot be something that might seriously impair the physical, mental or moral development of people under 18 and cannot be broadcasted, the fact that you want to film a documentary about rape is not fitting with these regulations, people who have been affected by these topics could trigger them mentally and would therefore not be appropriate to broadcast on TV. Ofcom regulates under certain acts one of them including the Communications Act 2003 which replaces the telecommunications act 1984 basically making sure everything that is shown on TV and the internet fits rules.

The Obscene Publications Act 1959 applies to television and covers material which is obscene, whether it is in a person's possession or it is published or broadcast. The definition of obscene is "likely to deprave and corrupt" the audience for which it is intended and includes not only sexually explicit material but material relating to violence and drug taking, this once again does not comply with the No date rape campaign you wanted to film, you asked for re-enactments with if they are complying with rape would not be appropriate as they would contain sexual nature.

the BBFC official rating for the documentary would most likely be 15 or 18 as it will potray sexual activities but not enough for it to be rated an 18 depending on the nature of the re-enactments, it will also contain dangerous behavior such as talk of suicide or depression or any other mental illnesses which can't be in much detail otherwise it will be rated as an 18 and therefore many children who attend high school wont be able to watch.
Intellectual Property results from the expression of an idea so basically if you invent or create something it allows you to own the work that you create, the internet has made it a huge issue because of the unauthorized use of copyright material on YouTube and other streaming sites, you wanted to use a popular music soundtrack in the documentary but this will be un available unless it is copy right free music because a popular music sound track will most likely be protected and you cannot risk infringement and a legal dispute.
